Experience the Healing Power of Moxibustion
What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy that involves the burning of dried mugwort (moxa) to promote healing and restore balance in the body. This practice, which dates back thousands of years, is often used to warm areas of the body, improve circulation, and stimulate the flow of Qi (vital energy) through the acupuncture channels. Moxibustion is a natural and non-invasive technique that complements acupuncture, though it can be used independently depending on the condition being treated.
Why is Moxibustion Used?
Moxibustion is commonly used to treat a variety of conditions, particularly those related to cold, stagnation, or deficiency in the body. In TCM, it is believed that cold and dampness can obstruct the flow of Qi, causing pain and illness. Moxibustion helps to dispel cold and support the body's Yang energy, promoting warmth, vitality, and healing.
It is especially beneficial for:
Muscular pain and stiffness
Digestive disorders
Fertility support
Menstrual irregularities
Breech presentation in pregnancy (evidence suggests moxibustion may help turn a breech baby)
How is Moxibustion Done?
During a moxibustion session, a trained acupuncturist will burn moxa either directly on the skin or near the body. The two main types are:
Direct Moxibustion: A small cone of moxa is placed on an acupuncture point and ignited. It is removed before it burns the skin to prevent discomfort or injury.
Indirect Moxibustion: A moxa stick or cone is burned at a distance from the skin, usually held above specific acupuncture points, allowing the heat and smoke to penetrate the area.
Moxibustion can also be applied over acupuncture needles to enhance the treatment’s effects by warming the needle and providing deeper stimulation of the acupuncture point.
What Results Can Patients Expect After Moxibustion?
Patients often report feeling a comforting warmth that radiates deep into the body during and after moxibustion. The heat can soothe areas of pain, reduce inflammation, and improve overall circulation. Many people experience reduced pain, improved digestion, enhanced energy levels, and greater emotional balance following treatment.
In the case of moxibustion for turning a breech baby, studies suggest that when used around the 34th week of pregnancy, moxibustion may increase the likelihood of the baby moving into a head-down position, though results may vary.
As moxibustion is a gentle and non-invasive therapy, it is suitable for a wide range of patients. However, the treatment plan will always be tailored to individual needs and conditions to ensure optimal results.
